Otto the Orange makes a special appearance at McEvoy:      Otto the Orange made a grand appearance recently at the McEvoy Education Campus of Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES, where nearly 100 students and  staff greeted the Syracuse University mascot  with hugs and high-fives.       Otto was invited to Cortland for a celebration of a building-wide initiative called Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports, or PBIS. A Very SPECIAL visit from author Bruce Coville: On Wednesday March 16, 2016, Miss Brown's classroom at NPE had the privilege and honor to have a special author visitor, Bruce Coville join our classroom to talk about writing.  Our students have been reading his book Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher during our daily read aloud time. Deaf and Hard of Hearing students help recreate their classroom environment: Over the past few months, students in Mrs. Phinney's Deaf and Hard of Hearing classes at Solvay High School have been working on a Project Based Learning (PBL) experience to make reading and literacy more engaging in the classroom. The students have been working collaboratively with the company Yogibo, a  New Age bean bag furniture company that sells lounge bags, bean bag chairs, body pillows, rugs, and more. On March 4, as a result of their hard work, they were invited to the Yogibo store at Destiny Mall to create their own classroom furniture. The students, who rely on American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate, were finding that signing from behind a desk was restrictive, so they wanted to explore a non-traditional classroom setup for the purpose of enhancing ... Inspired by world-renowned chef, Innovation Tech students prepare cultural food:      After wor king with the producers of CNN’s hit television show, “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” students at Innovation Tech in Liverpool researched traditional foods in Spanish-speaking countries and created their own recipes to cook up, serve and eat.      Students offered bite-sized portions of their efforts during presentations March 10th that covered nearly table in the cafeteria of their high school off Crown Road. The students made omelettes, enchiladas, sandwiches, plantains, lemon crème, cake and empanadas.      In April, the students will take a field trip to New York City to visit the CNN studios in person. Program at CTC is celebrating Dr. Seuss’s Birthday all week. Each day students and staff are dressing up to celebrate this occasion.  Monday: students were treated to a Green Eggs and Ham (and pancakes!) breakfast while they dressed in green. Tuesday was stars and Stripes day.  While wearing striped clothing, students and staff who were caught doing something kind were given a star to wear. Wednesday everyone was able to come to school in Pajamas!  Crazy socks were the theme for Thursday and Friday to honor the Cat in the Hat, everyone will be wearing a hat.  Throughout the week classrooms and bulletin boards were decorated for the occasion.  Students were treated with celebrity ... Students present “The Immigrant Experience” cultural celebration with Wegmans: Eighth grade students in the OCM BOCES Reach Program have been working on a project entitled “The Immigrant Experience,” during which they spent time researching immigration along with a variety of cultural foods as they learned about different cultures in China, Ireland, Germany, Italy and Poland. Students used their knowledge to create visual displays and on Thursday, February 25, they had the opportunity to present information about the foods and cultures in the Taft Road Wegmans Cafe. While students presented their information, staff from Wegmans was on hand to provide free samples of the foods the students researched. 2016 is the second year that students have presented their cultural projects in collaboration with Wegmans. Cortland parents, students experience Innovation Tech:       About 65 parents and students from the Cortland area trekked through the cold on Feb. 10th to experience first-hand the unique educational character of Innovation Tech, an OCM BOCES high school in Liverpool that will soon be replicated in their region.      The new school, called Seven Valleys New Tech Academy, is set to open in September at 240 Port Watson St. in Cortland.      Like Innovation Tech, Seven Valleys New Tech Academy will shred most of the traditional concepts of a school day. Instead of working quietly and independently in neat rows of desks, students at Seven Valleys will work collaboratively on real-world projects, guide their own instruction and use technology as a matter of course. Teachers will work in pairs and ... Expanding a zoo? Innovation Tech students present to BOCES Board: If you need to expand a zoo, students at Innovation Tech have your answer. Three students from the cutting-edge OCM BOCES high school in Liverpool presented their project, called “At Home in my Biome,” during a recent meeting of the BOCES Board of Education. The students tackled a possible expansion project for The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango, which has boomed in popularity. The students conducted research, developed an interactive map and created a model habitat for their proposed new animal – a red panda -- using the Minecraft video game. Student delegates announced for Hispanic/Latino leadership program: A program aimed at empowering Hispanic/Latino high school students from across the state recently announced this year’s delegates from six Central New York school districts. The program, called the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, is hosted by the Mid-State Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN) at OCM BOCES. Students who qualify for the program engage in five leadership training sessions before attending a culminating event March 19-21 in Albany. At the three-day Albany conference, called the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, students participate in a mock Assembly session and debate legislation that affects their state and communities. Seeking nominees for Career and Technical Education Alumni Hall of Fame: OCM BOCES is currently seeking nominations for its Career and Technical Education (CTE) Alumni Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors OCM BOCES CTE program graduates who demonstrate leadership in their field. Two individuals will be selected for recognition as 2016 Hall of Fame inductees: one graduate from the Irvin E. Henry Campus in Syracuse, NY and one graduate from the Charles E. McEvoy Education Center in Cortland, NY.   The 2016 inductees selected from each campus will be honored at individual award ceremonies held at their respective campuses in June. To be considered for the OCM BOCES Alumni Hall of Fame, individuals must be a graduate of an OCM BOCES Career and Technical Education program, must be currently engaged in a career related to their BOCES program of completion ... OCM BOCES to open Seven Valleys New Tech Academy in September 2016: Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES will open Seven Valleys New Tech Academy in Cortland County in Fall 2016, the organization announced this week. The creation of the school was announced last July. The school will serve area high school students in grades 9-12, and will provide an innovative learning environment that aims to improve students’ college and career readiness through project-based learning, collaborative workspace and technology. The school will also be a site for teacher training.
